Our Story
In 1970, members of United Rubber Workers Local 831 combined their savings and began URW 831 Members Federal Credit Union. It was ran out of a shoebox. Fifty-five years later, URW Community Federal Credit Union has over $220 million dollars in its full-service financial institution. It is the only locally owned and operated financial institution in Danville, VA.
The history of this credit union is a success story of individual hard work and sharing to help many. URW Local 831 members A. Ray Deel, Charles R. Denny, Jack D. Dodson, Jimmie E. Foster, Peter A. George, R. Jack Jones, Al T. Lewis, and John B. Thompson signed the certificate to organize an employee’s credit union. These founders could not have imagined a credit union with 7 locations and over $220 million dollars and nearly 36,000 members. But the credit union was established on the principle of “taking care of our own,” and that service has earned the support of members through the decades. In 1986 URW 831 Members Federal merged with Telco Federal credit union and in 2003 URW opened its doors to the community and became URW Community Federal Credit Union. In 2008, URW grew again by merging with Danville Regional Medical Center Federal Credit Union. URW Community Federal is celebrating over 55 years of service to our members. Chairman Emerson Phillips leads the all-volunteer Board of Directors. Cheryl Doss, President/CEO, leads the staff.
URW Statement of Commitment
As a member-owned, not-for-profit credit union, URW is committed to our members. We will uphold our fundamental responsibility to actively serve our membership, and as appropriate, the communities they live in. We will treat all members with respect and dignity and we will offer honest, fair deals to members at all times. We will deliver a range of low-cost products and services to the diverse economic and social makeup of our members and potential members. We will continually demonstrate the value of membership in URW across all facets of our operations.
URW offers services designed to improve the economic and social well being of all members, and return financial value to them as part of their participation in the member-owned financial cooperative. Our objective is to ensure all URW members always experience the best value and service with complete trust.
URW is committed to strengthening consumer financial education and literacy. In addition, we are committed to educating members and the public, alike, about credit union uniqueness, philosophy, and values.
URW will endeavor to preserve credit union democratic principles, including demographic representation and volunteer participation in credit union activities.
URW recognizes the value of demographic diversity in staff as well as in volunteers and members. We strive to bring people of diverse backgrounds and experiences into leadership and other roles at the credit union.
URW works to build and strengthen the credit union movement by providing financial and in-kind resources to others within the credit union community, and by actively advocating the credit union difference at all levels of government and in other appropriate public forums.
URW extends the credit union philosophy of “people helping people” by seeking opportunities and engaging in activities that we believe can make a difference in the quality of life and financial well-being of our employees, members, and the community, in which we work, live, and play.
